1978年10月至1982年9月,中國(guó)天津大學(xué)土建系結(jié)構(gòu)工程(工業(yè)與民用建筑)專業(yè),獲工學(xué)士學(xué)位。


1982年10月至1983年9月,出國(guó)預(yù)備研究生,大連外國(guó)語(yǔ)學(xué)院完成日語(yǔ)培訓(xùn)。


1983年10月至1989年3月,日本九州大學(xué)工學(xué)部建筑工學(xué)科,1986年3月獲工學(xué)碩士學(xué)位,1989年3月獲工學(xué)博士學(xué)位。1989年3月獲日本九州大學(xué)工學(xué)博士學(xué)位。


1989年3月至1990年3月,在日本東京青木建設(shè)株式會(huì)社研究所工作。


1990年3月至1992年3月,在美國(guó)加州大學(xué)圣迭哥校從事博士后研究工作。


1992年3月至1994年5月,美國(guó)加州大學(xué)圣迭哥校,研究員(Research Scientist)并兼任講師。


1994年6月獲美國(guó)職業(yè)注冊(cè)土木工程師執(zhí)照, 同時(shí)被評(píng)為博士生導(dǎo)師。


1994年6月起,受聘于美國(guó)南加州大學(xué)土木系,歷任助理教授 (Assistant Professor)、副教授(Associate Professor)并獲終身教職。擔(dān)任系試驗(yàn)室主任和工程與抗震研究中心主任。


2001年10月起,任教育部長(zhǎng)江學(xué)者、湖南大學(xué)特聘教授。從事圍繞基于性能的抗震設(shè)計(jì)、高性能新材料的結(jié)構(gòu)應(yīng)用等綜合研究。


2005年1月起,受聘為“985工程”“現(xiàn)代結(jié)構(gòu)與橋梁科技創(chuàng)新平臺(tái)”首席科學(xué)家。


2006年5月起,任湖南大學(xué)土木工程學(xué)院院長(zhǎng)。


2008年,受聘為中組部“千人計(jì)劃”學(xué)者。


2015年5月聘任為南京工業(yè)大學(xué)土木工程學(xué)院院長(zhǎng)[。
