(Reuters) - Specialty chemicals firm W.R. Grace & Co (GRA.N) has received approval from a U.S. bankruptcy court to solicit votes for its reorganization plan, court documents showed.
The approval brings the company a step closer to exit from Chapter 11. However, earlier this month, the company said its exit from bankruptcy may be delayed if it failed to get $1 billion to fund its reorganization on acceptable terms.
Judge Judith Fitzgerald on Monday approved the company's request to begin soliciting votes from creditors. W.R. Grace & Co, based in Columbia, Maryland, filed for bankruptcy in April 2001 to resolve asbestos personal injury and property damage claims against it.
The company said last year that it will settle all present and future asbestos-related personal injury claims, under an agreement requiring $250 million in cash to be paid to a trust and deferred payments at $110 million per year for 5 years beginning in 2019.
Shares of the company were down 6 cents at $4.24 Wednesday afternoon on the New York Stock Exchange.
