Cemex hikes Mexican cement prices
Mexico's Cemex, the world's third largest cement producer, said on Tuesday it had increased its domestic bagged cement prices by 138 pesos ($9.5) a tonne, citing higher raw material costs.
Cemex (CX.N) (CMXCPO.MX), which operates in more than 50 countries, said the price increases took effect on Feb. 1 in Mexico, one of its biggest markets.
"The cost of the main raw materials to produce cement have grown at a faster rate than the market price," Cemex said in an email to Reuters.
Monterrey-based Cemex said it hiked bulk cement prices by 92 pesos a tonne, although it declined to give the increase as a percentage or any further details.
Cement distributors consulted by Reuters said the hikes amounted to a 7 percent increase. Before the price increases, a bag of cement was around 2,100 pesos.
Cemex, the dominant cement maker in Mexico, is struggling with a large debt load, slumping sales in its U.S. and European markets and tight credit amid the global financial crisis.
